Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
