Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans with niche passions.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games globally and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
